Race has been the elephant in the boudoir, so to speak, during the burlesque revival. While performers of color have been active practitioners and advocates of the reborn art of the striptease, its most visible icons — Dita von Tease, or say, Dirty Martini — tend to be white. The Kaleidoscope Cabaret puts burlesque performers of color center stage, while playing fast and loose with what is being stripped off: be it clothing, gender norms, or racial exotification. The lineup — including pioneer Toni Elling, along with a dozen other talented ladies, drag artists, and tassel-twirlers —is nothing short of fierce.
