Evenhanded but no less entertaining for it, filmmakers Joe Winston and Laura Cohen are a welcome counterpoint to the Michael Moore school of manipulative polemics. Their documentary What's the Matter with Kansas? jumps off from Thomas Frank's 2004 bestseller of the same name, but they steer clear of an over-arching narrative and simply let Kansans speak for themselves in a panoply of interviews. As people across the political spectrum talk about their beliefs — from an 18-year-old Republican activist to a disillusioned populist farmer — Frank's message emerges pretty much on its own. "Cultural anger is marshaled to achieve economic ends," he writes in the book, as the citizens of a once-liberal state vote against their own interests over issues like abortion.
