From George Washington's cherry tree chop to the sale of Manhattan for a pocketful of beads, American history is full of mythic anecdotes. The interplay between reality and fiction in American history is put through the science fiction-wringer in Route 1: R for Replicant, a new group show where artists ranging from ex-punk illustrator Raymond Pettibon to archival deconstructionist Eleanor Antin employ a modern version of Philip K. Dick's Voight-Kampff machine — the author's imaginary way to separate human from android — to parse fable from fact.
