Christina Mazza and Erik Otto are the latest to join the ranks of resident artists at the SF Dump's jewels-from-junk program, completing four-month residencies to create bodies of work from salvaged materials. Mazza, an apt choice whose work has long focused on themes of rejection and redemption, presents finely rendered drawings of singular discarded items for careful reexamination. Otto also brings our attention to life's detritus, his installations and illustrations asking us to consider the meaning of these discarded odds and ends. Together, these bodies of work demonstrate — in addition to both artist's resourcefulness and ingenuity — what’s at stake in recycled art: using what’s already there to address both aesthetic and ecological problems.
