Brooklyn-based painter (and San Francisco Art Institute grad) Chris Ballantyne creates strange intersections of the natural and the man-made. But his paintings aren't about the novelty of these hybridized landscapes of incongruous elements as much as their instability. Mountain peaks push through otherwise flat parking lots while a giant sinkhole interrupts a row of apartment buildings. Surfers ride the waves of a rural river. Geographic distinctions — between town and country, suburbia and wilderness — collapse. As quakes rumble off the California coast and Haiti lies in ruins, Ballantyne's reordering of the landscape feels scarily plausible, reminding us that nothing, lest of all our physical surroundings, is fixed.
