Before the Internet, another kind of magic — wireless telegraphy, aka radio — made teleportation possible, astoundingly collapsing distance to bring far away news and entertainment right into listeners' living rooms. While broadcast technology has lost much of its magic luster, artist and performer Kamau Patton sheds the light fantastic on radio once again, with his reference-rich Icons of Attention. Although drawing on multi-decade layers of source material, Patton is less interested in their literal representation, instead focusing on perceptual and experiential qualities. Collaboratively crafting, and in turn deconstructing, loose stories with well-known local artists and gallery visitors alike, Patton further draws audiences in by broadcasting his creations to those tuned in within a two-mile radius of YBCA.
