In 1969, Timothy Leary, the Harvard psychologist and Pied Piper of LSD, ran for Governor of California against Ronald Reagan. His gubernatorial attempt failed, but he did manage to get John Lennon to write a catchy campaign song — "Come Together." Tonight at City Light Books, Peter Conners, Don Lattin, and Nicholas Schou, who have all written books about Leary, tell stories about his life. Expect tales about turning on, tuning in, and dropping out at the Human Be-In at Golden Gate Park in 1967; his relationship with poet Allen Ginsberg; and his predilection for "Leary biscuits" (a microwaved cracker topped with cheese and a bud of marijuana) on his deathbed. Prepare to expand your mind and possibly that of the authors reading tonight — Lattin, author of The Harvard Psychedelic Club, has so far been offered magic mushrooms, ecstasy, and hits of blotter acid by fans on his book tour.

City Lights says…

Half a century has passed since Timothy Leary, a clinical psychologist at Harvard University, swallowed a handful of magic mushrooms on his summer vacation in Mexico in August of 1960. Leary returned to Harvard that fall convinced that psychedelic drugs would revolutionize psychology and change the world. At this special event, three California authors with recent books on the psychedelic sixties will read from their works and discuss the legacy of the High Priest of LSD; the man Richard Nixon called "the most dangerous man in America."
