Note:
The series continues on Saturday, February 20 at 7 and 9pm, when Rees screens Target Video footage of Survival Research Laboratories' infamous live performances.
The Sex Pistols may have imploded after their notorious final show at SF's now-defunct Winterland Ballroom, but the city's own punk scene couldn't care less that the music's most tabloid-ready cover boys had called it quits. There was enough happening locally — thanks to bands such as Crime, Nervous Gender, the Avengers, and Flipper — and artist-cum-videographer Joe Rees was there to capture it all. Rees' lo-fi Target Video concert tapes became essential documents of the scene, bringing 'zine culture into the VHS age. Tonight, Rees is on hand to reflect on SF's wilder, woollier days while sharing rare footage of his favorite local and touring bands from the time.
