California College of the Arts says…

Berlin-based visual artist Keren Cytter will give an artist's talk about her recent video and performance work.

Cytter's unpredictable and seemingly spontaneous film narratives are inspired by social realities and experimental storytelling, with intensified scenes from everyday life. Cytter uses film language and discontinuous soundtracks to unravel her subjects, suggesting both disenchantment and fascination with narrative codes.

Her lo-fi works focus on relationships and mundane objects -
exploding birthday cakes, burning Christmas trees and record players, Cytter's works re-stage visual clichés and cheap special effects with absurdity and startling poignancy.

Cytter has a current show at the UCLA Hammer Museum, with recent exhibitions at the Tate Modern, London; Performa 9 and X Initiative, New York; Kunsthalle Zurich, Switzerland; the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; and the Venice Biennale. In addition to her film and video works, Cytter also creates drawing series and writes novels.

Cytter's presentation is part of Artists' Films at CCA, a contemporary artists' films series curated by artist and CCA lecturer Binta Ayofemi.
