In nonfiction eco-thriller The World Without Us, veteran environmental journalist Alan Weisman explores what would happen if humankind was suddenly wiped off the face of the Earth. Within two days, subway systems would flood; within two decades, the Panama Canal would fail; and within 100,000 years, carbon-dioxide concentration would return to pre-human levels. In short, Mother Nature would slowly but surely repair most — but not all — of the damage humans have wrought. Plastics, bronze sculptures, radio waves, and Mount Rushmore would be among the last remnants to vanish from a people-free planet. Tonight, Weisman discusses his book and outlines his provocative proposal for alleviating our toxic impact on the world.
