Created without any staging or manipulation, the photographs in Kirk Crippens' Foreclosure, USA: The Great Recession capture the emotion and enormity of recent financial disaster while resisting sentimentality. Although inspired by WPA photographers such as Dorothea Lange, Crippens portrays his figures only in vestige: shoes, a scrawled note, vacuum lines on a plush carpet. This serves his subject matter well, driving the point that nobody's home anymore. Missing appliances and fixtures signify in their absence what is not there: that which makes a house a home. Images of banks, roads, and auctions touch upon the larger forces at play in this catastrophe.
