Steuart Pittman, a 2009 Mills MFA grad, makes abstract drawings and paintings of simple rectangles, half-circles, and squares, using colors that are complementary but never predictable — such as turquoise, salmon, and black; or army green, sky blue, and white. While he is not the only young, contemporary artist to invoke mid-century graphic design and color-field painting, he seems to be the most earnest, channeling his predecessors with a refreshing lack of irony.
