“Seemingly finished (for the time being) with chronicling his intimate family tragedies (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) and the vast horrors of modern genocide (What is the What), Dave Eggers recently turned his predilection for star-crossed protagonists towards Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a Syrian-American hardware-store owner and landlord living with his family in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. While his wife and children evacuated the city in August 2005, Abdulrahman stayed behind to watch over his house and store. Written by Eggers in its protagonist's voice (as he did in What is the What), Zeitoun follows the consequences of Abdulrahman's fateful choice. Tonight, Eggers is joined on the Herbst Theater's stage by his subjects, the Zeitouns, for an intimate conversation about their remarkable ordeal.”
With his most recent book, Zeitoun, Dave Eggers has again created a masterful piece of storytelling/journalism. With meticulous research and unobtrusive prose, Eggers writes the story of Syrian-born Abdulrahman Zeitoun, his wife Kathy, and their four children during the after the disaster of Hurricane Katrina. While Kathy takes the children to Baton Rouge to wait out the storm, Abdulrahman stays behind to protect their property. Zeitoun is the story of disaster relief gone wrong in the worst of ways, and the generosity and humanity shown during the times of greatest disaster. Dave Eggers will be joined on stage by Abdulrahman and Kathy Zeitoun.
