“Mark Growden's ninth album, Saint Judas, was written and recorded among his long-time Oakland haunts; and this week he plays a series of local shows in the lead up to its official release. A gritty treasure of urban romanticism, this soulful, surprising record — despite Growden's impressive supporting ensemble and self-accompaniment on the accordion, baritone sax, banjo, and handlebars — is essentially a voice-driven document. At the heart of the standards, rare covers, and original compositions are Growden's tightly-controlled, richly inflected, and subtly expressive vocals — which, as great as the record is, still beg to be heard in person. The SF shows also see the debut of the new video "Coyote" by award-winning stop-motion animator Christiane Cegavske.”
