Los Angeles-based sculptor, painter, and installation artist Castillo literally wraps up her month-long residency at San Jose's MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino America gallery, leaving behind a large-scale public art installation in the the adjoining park at 1st and Market. Bloodlines builds on the artist's previous works in which she used hair as a weaving medium as both a conceptual and formal gesture, implicating the body in a new, history-enriched approach to modernism. A network of red fabric stitched (in glow-in-the-dark thread) with the names of early local settlers forms a canopy in the arcade of dead trees that line the park, giving it a new kind of life — but one which will also disintegrate organically as the elements intervene over the course of several weeks.

Parque de los Pobladores says…

MACLA says:

Castillo invites people who would like to contribute to the project to embroider their family names onto the red fabric that will be woven through the trees in the Parque de Los Pobladores across the street from MACLA. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in art, culture and for those who would like to contribute their family names to the Bloodlines project.
