The psychedelic noiseniks in Caroliner describe themselves as "industrial bluegrass," and their identity-blurring self-mythologizing garners frequent Residents comparisons. But they have a much more abrasive streak than those San Fran pranksters — banjo strums and plink-plonk mallet percussion grapple with Japanoise-style spazz and power-electronics hiss. Still, it's their sense of theatricality that precedes them: their enormous, handmade sets and costumes look like GWAR dipped in a Sid and Marty Croft acid bath. Tonight, they take over the Berkeley Art Museum for the L@TE Friday night party series.

Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive says…

L@TE NOISE features Caroliner and a fresh lineup of musical acts from the Bay Area music scene. Over the last few decades, this thriving musical culture has pioneered new sounds, from bluegrass to punk to experimental noise, with an arsenal of groundbreaking bands as well as intrepid performance spaces that nurture a D.I.Y. ethic. The program will also feature a site-specific installation and numerous musical additions to the Zine Mart inventory.
