Laura Skandera Trombley's Mark Twain obsession began when a stamp collector approached the USC English department asking if some letters he had bought for a dollar each were written by Mark Twain. Graduate student Trombley was tasked with investigating. The letters were genuine, and since then she has written three books about how Twain's romantic relationships influenced his writing. Her latest explores the role of his secretary-cum-lover Isabel Lyon, following the death of Twain's wife. His daughter Clara covered up the role of his other woman, but tonight Trombley airs some unflattering family laundry in public, and writes Isabel Lyon back into literary history.
