Scratch 'n' sniff usually gets relegated to Lisa Frank novelties, but To Curry Favor, Sita Kuratomi Bhaumik's latest exhibit at the 18 Reasons Gallery, promises to make you reconsider the novelty act. Bhaumik is known for using unconventional materials like self-tanning spray, pantyhose, and candy wrappers in her work. This show centers on a series of geometric, textile-like prints composed of paper and spices. Reflecting on her Colombian/Japanese/Bengali heritage, Bhaumik encourages her audience to view and smell each piece. This evokes scent-based memories and personal reflection.

Believing that scent carries a cultural weight that belies its invisibility, Sita Kuratomi Bhaumik uses spices, sights, tastes, and smells to evoke culinary and cultural heritage and the impermanence of identity and place.
