Michael Ondaatje is the author of The English Patient and Anil's Ghost, but long before his novels were attracting Booker Prizes and scripts for Oscar-winning movies, he was a prolific poet. The reclusive writer has published 12 volumes of verse, with an emphasis on sensuous descriptions of his lush birthplace, Sri Lanka. Tonight he returns to San Francisco, the setting of his last novel Divisadero, to read at the de Young's Cultural Encounters night. (FYI: In his Running In The Family memoir, Ondaatje tells of his eccentric father's habit of holding up trains with a revolver when drunk.)
