“Freeze-dried burials. Sounds appealing, doesn't it? Artists Kara Tanaka and Marco Rios traveled to Sweden to learn about the country's eco-friendly burial technique that involves freeze-drying human remains. The process produces a white powder, which is placed in a biodegradable casket in a shallow grave. Above the grave, a memorial tree is planted. Within a year, the contents have decomposed into loam, nourishing the newly-planted memorial. In their show, Tanaka and Rios showcase this and other death rituals to explore humanity's experience with mortality.”
Note:
There will be YBCAlive! Artist's talks on Saturday, Mar 20 (2–4pm), Thursday, Mar 25 (6–8pm), and Saturday Mar 27 (2–4pm).
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts says:
For their first collaborative exhibition, Death's Boutique, Los Angeles-based artists Kara Tanaka and Marco Rios investigate death by delving into heavy subject matter with both humor and sincerity, with a new series of sculptures accompanied by photographs, video and printed matter. The exhibition mimics an elaborate stage set and includes source materials and ephemera that adopt unconventional materials to create hybrid sculptures that mine an intimate, personal psychology. Death's Boutique is part of YBCA Exhibition series PAUSE :: Practice and Exchange.
