Somber Oakland tunesmith Jamie Stewart is as important to his young, earnest fans as Ian Curtis and Morrissey were to the post-punk adolescents of their day. (At a recent DJ appearance, Stewart only played Joy Division and the Smiths, and his band Xiu Xiu have covered "Ceremony".) With Xiu Xiu now fleshed out into a limber quartet, his songs strike an impressive balance between quivering, emotive vocals, warm electronica, and shards of noise. High quality doom-mongering.

Bottom of the Hill says…

Kill Rock Stars says:

The two biggest constants throughout Xiu Xiu's catalog are honesty and evolution. This remains true with Dear God, I Hate Myself as it delivers a look at responsibility, fear, healing, and societal roles wrapped in rich Gothic pop music.
