John Cage, the avant-garde American composer of the post-war era, was one of the first to systematically explore silence through music. In his piece "Music for Marcel Duchamp," Cage juxtaposes a single melodic line with empty bars. It was the soundtrack for a surreal dream-sequence involving rotating turntables and nude ladies that Duchamp created for the film 1947 film Dreams That Money Can Buy. Tonight pianist Thomas Schultz, who collaborated with Cage on numerous occasions, performs this piece, as well as works by Frederic Rzewski, and San Franciscan composer Hyo-shin Na.
