Three reasons we love the Tonga Room: 1) It features cover bands playing on a grass-thatched bandstand in a lagoon. 2) The dance floor is the deck of a 1900s schooner. 3) Every 20 minutes there's a simulated tropical rainstorm. The Fairmont Hotel, which houses the kitsch-tastic bar in its basement, is threatening demolition. If you are a "concerned San Franciscan, Tiki freak, mid-century fan, or rum aficionado," head to Smuggler's Cove and sign a petition to get the venue designated a historic landmark. Have a flaming Volcano (with sparklers and a skull-shaped bowl) while you're there...

Smuggler's Cove says…

S.O.S. Tonga says:

Come one and come all to a gathering at Smuggler's Cove to sign a petition opposing the demolition of the Tonga Room. Around 6pm, Chris VerPlanck and Erica Schultz of S.O.S. Tonga will provide an update and exhort you to contact the Historic Preservation Commission. After signing the petition stay a while and enjoy a rum cocktail under the soft glow of Tiki torches and beachcomber lamps.
