"Sweetheart / when you break thru / you'll find / a poet here / not quite what one would choose," writes SF Poet Laureate Diane di Prima. Her poetic treatise screams out for women's rights. In her biography "Memoir of a Beatnik" di Prima emerges as a liberated, intellectual female. She started writing when she was seven, and by the time she hit puberty she'd committed to poetry. The NY-native entered the Beat movement in its early hay-day, and in the 60s found her home in SF. Tonight, see di Prima read with 35 other Bay Area poets, as a Benefit for Doctors Without Borders who are doing relief work in Haiti and Chile.
