Those categories of music not neatly shelved and delineated into familiar genre-based categories find a much-needed champion in the Other Minds festival — a three-day celebration of sounds too progressive, contemporary, or altogether strange, to find a home elsewhere. The lineup is heavily international, chock-full of world and US premieres, and highlights include performances by electroacoustic composer Natasha Barrett, minimalist master and former Morton Feldman student Tom Johnson, and classical guitarist Gyan Riley (who seems to have picked up a thing or two from his father, composer Terry Riley).

Jewish Community Center of San Francisco says…

“The premier new music festival on the West Coast” (Los Angeles Times) brings nine innovative musicians from around the world. Highly influential senior composers Chou Wen-chung (China/U.S.), Tom Johnson (U.S./France) and New Orleans jazz patriarch Kidd Jordan joins locals Gyan Riley, Carla Kihlstedt and Lisa Bielawa (U.S.), Jürg Frey (Switzerland) and Pawel Mykietyn (Poland). Performers include ROVA Saxophone Quartet, Quatuor Bozzini (Montreal) and San Francisco’s Del Sol String Quartet.
