Last Feburary, the late Howard Zinn conducted a guest-studded reading of Voices of a People's History — a companion to the bestselling A People's History of the United States — at Mission High School. The evening brought to the stage songs and speeches outlining America's constant struggle to do the right thing; a struggle very much at the heart of Zinn's activism, historical research, and social criticism. Tonight, friends, colleagues, and family remember this true pioneer for social justice, who passed away last month, in an intimate tribute.

City Arts & Lectures says…

Most widely known as the author of the best-selling book, A People's History of the United States, Howard Zinn was also an activist, historian, and social critic. First published in 1980, A People's History of the United States routinely sells over one hundred thousand copies a year, and has just been made into a documentary, The People Speak, featuring narration by Matt Damon,  Eddie Vedder, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Penn, and many others.  Zinn, a veteran of WWII,  was an outspoken anti-war activist. His 1967 book, Vietnam: The Logic of Withdrawal, was one of the earliest books calling for the end of U.S involvement in Vietnam. Zinn published several books denouncing the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
