Phyllis Wattis Theater
Grace McCann Morley, SFMOMA’s first director, began screening films at the museum in 1937, a tradition that continues today. In this second part of our series on film at SFMOMA, guest curator Steve Anker looks at the period from 1967 to 1978, organizing three eclectic programs of narrative, documentary, and avant-garde films. The breadth of films shown during these years was staggering, with the museum becoming a venue for the most important new work. Rediscoveries by such major figures as Yasujiro Ozu, Luis Buñuel, Alfred Hitchcock, and Buster Keaton could be seen alongside films by Stan Brakhage, Bruce Conner, Ernie Gehr, Pat O’Neill, Standish Lawder, Gunvor Nelson, and scores of other experimentalists.
