Last Gasp's printing presses have churned out comics by R.Crumb, art books by Mark Ryden, female genitalia coloring books, and even the odd Leonardo DiCaprio calendar. All under the tagline "Brain candy for the masses since April Fool's Day 1970." Which makes tonight their 40th birthday. Founder Ron Turner celebrates with a shindig at 111 Minna. The gallery walls are lined with original artwork from more than 50 artists — from Crumb to Gary Baseman — forming a comic-strip time-line of all the lowbrow artists the publisher has launched and supported. For a man who named his company Last Gasp and his first comic Slow Death Funnies, Turner sure is going strong.
