A typical Wavy Gravy outfit consists of a red nose, tie-dyed false teeth, and size 17 shoes. He adopted the clown persona after he got hurt so badly at a 60’s-anti-war rally that he needed a spinal infusion. His logic: the authorities wouldn’t beat up a clown, and he was right. He went on to become a jester for the Merry Pranksters and the official clown of the Grateful Dead. He’s celebrating April Fools Day by screening a documentary that chronicles his NY days rooming with Bob Dylan, performing stand-up with Lenny Bruce as his manager, and MCing Woodstock. Proceeds go towards Wavy’s Camp Winnarainbow, which encourages underprivileged children to run away to the circus.

Ripple Effect Film says:

Beginning with Woodstock '99, director Michelle Esrick has spent ten years documenting the life of Wavy Gravy. Saint Misbehavin' journeys from the hills of California to the Himalayan Mountains to reveal the life of this one-of-a-kind servant to humanity. The film blends Wavy's own words with magical stories from an extraordinary array of fellow travelers both cultural and counter-cultural, revealing the man behind the clown's grin and the fool's clothing.
