The Pansy Craze was a period in the '20s and '30s when gay performers ("pansies") and gay clubs started to gain popularity among mainstream audiences. It's a subject of celebration for performance artist Seth Eisen, who wrote and performs in Blackbird. The title is inspired by the Beatles song famously performed by SF's '70s disco diva Sylvester. The show brings historically significant pansies — including Sylvester and Klaus Nomi — to life through music, video, puppetry, movement, and storytelling. Our emcee is the character Jean Malin, an early trailblazer of the Pansy Craze, who died at the tender age of 24 when his car went off of a pier in Venice, CA, in reverse gear. "La Malin" lives on in Blackbird to tell the tale of divas who challenged the status quo with glitter and panache.

Mama Calizo's Voice Factory says…

Eye Zen Art says:

Through puppetry and a hybrid of movement, music, video, and monologue, Blackbird introduces an entourage of queer mavericks who gave voice to the queer underground of their time. These themes unfold through song and storytelling, illuminating the lives of characters who made astounding cultural and social contributions while remaining virtually unknown to both straight and gay audiences alike. The diverse characters of Blackbird will bring to life lost queer histories, giving image, voice and movement to the forgotten, the unspoken and the taboo.
