When Meatless Mondays was first launched during World War I, millions of meat-loving Americans joined in and found that by saving "a salami for their boy in the Army," they felt healthier too. The gristle-free day has now been revived as a national campaign — Americans eat nearly 50% more meat than is healthy or necessary, and there's plenty of fat to trim. Sir Paul McCartney started his own campaign last year in support of meat-free Mondays, and San Francisco pledged its allegiance recently when the city's Board of Supervisors passed a resolution urging local businesses to go veg. Tonight, the food lovers at 18 Reasons will demonstrate that veggies are as scrumptious as anything in your fridge. Plus, who knew? Studies show that habits changed on a Monday are more likely to stick.

We inaugurate a new iteration of our Meatless Mondays series tonight! In addition to cooking classes, we will now host inexpensive vegetarian dinners that make Meatless Mondays a celebratory and informative communal experience. On the 28th, join us around our big cypress table for a rice and beans meal that is vegetarian, delicious, and sustainable. Over dinner you'll learn about Mark Gravel's madly popular pop-up restaurant project and Jay Dion's poignant and powerful artwork based in the idea of a gift economy.
