“Michael Coomers and Curtis O'Mara know how to raise hell. As teenagers in Tuscon, AZ, they excelled in debauchery — peeing on their friends, terrorizing the neighbors, and rocking out in bands like Smart P*ssy and Teen Suicide. After two years, during which Coomers couch-surfed in haunted houses in North Carolina and Oakland, the two reunited, and formed Harlem along with bassist Jose Boyer. Now Austin-based, the band plays what they call "spasm music," inspired by Southern jazz music played using found objects like jugs, pipes, and tea kettles. Harlem may employ real instruments, but tonight their music still makes you dance like you caught the spirit.”
Harlem says:
The only band we like is Nirvana. The only album we like is Nevermind. The only song we like is "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
