New Yorker Malcolm Mooney was a sculptor and former member of a high school a cappella group when he decided to move to Germany. There, with no formal musical training, he became the lead singer of Krautrock band Can. His rambling chants and sporadic rhythmic yelps became a trademark of the band until his volatile antics caught up with him. His last show as Can's singer ended with him screaming "upstairs, downstairs" for two hours after the crowd had left. He decided to leave both Europe and his rock star life behind. These days, Mooney spends most of his time working on his art, but is back tonight with San Francisco band the Tenth Planet. Check out a mellowed, but still inventive, Mooney as he reminds audiences what put Can on the map.

Bottom of the Hill says…

Malcolm Mooney says:

Malcolm Mooney is a rock music singer, poet, and artist, probably best known as the original vocalist for German Krautrock band Can. He spent some time as a sculptor in New York, then moved to Germany and befriended Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay. At one point, they began jamming and decided to form a band. Malcolm came up with the name the Can for the group, later shortened to Can. His presence was the locomotive that drove and defined Can's rhythmic sound as heard on their albums Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Delay 1968 and Rite Time. He returned to the States to resume his painting career in the early '70s.
