The SF Mixtape Society is dedicated to the long-lost '80s ritual of creating a mixtape. When founders Annie Lin and John Verrochi arrived here from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, they missed their neighborhood mixtape swaps and decided to create their own "secret santa + mixtape" party. Tonight's theme is "Foreign vs. Familiar," so take your finger off the genius button and start practicing your fade-ins. If you want to take the prize for best mix, be warned: the competition is fierce. Lin's last playlist was a historical evolution of the song "Can't Help Falling in Love" and included renditions of the original French ballad and UB40's version. The event is designed for the digital age — well-curated playlists on CDs or flash drives are accepted, but cassette tape (complete with handmade album artwork) are preferred. Just remember to be kind and rewind.

SF Mixtape Society says:

The San Francisco Mixtape Society has announced the theme of "Foreign vs. Familiar" for its third music mix exchange and contest. The party, which is open to the public and free to attend, is dedicated to the art of making and exchanging music mixes. Attendees are invited to assemble a mix according to the theme in any format, whether cassette, CD, or USB. Mixes will be traded over the course of the evening through a spirited raffle. All attendees who bring a music mix will leave the event with a mix made by someone else. Additionally, all attendees will be able to cast votes for the mixes with the best track listings and artwork.
