Fritz Lang's Metropolis came out in 1927 Berlin to little acclaim. It was extremely expensive to make and almost bankrupted the studio in its wake. In an attempt to make the film more accessible to its audiences, 25 minutes of footage was ousted. These chopped scenes were considered to be lost forever until 2008 when an original copy of the film was discovered in a Buenos Aires museum vault. Tonight, the SF Silent Film Festival brings the complete, beefed-up version of the iconic dystopian-futurist masterpiece to the Castro's big screen, complete with a live musical score. The Alloy Orchestra's steampunk aesthetic and found-sound technique marries well to Lang's œuvre. FYI: The robot version of Maria directly inspired the look of C-3P0 in Star Wars (1977).
