If you've ever heard screeching violins in your head while stepping into a motel shower, you have Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) to thank. However, this famous movie music moment almost never happened. Composer Bernard Hermann initially rejected the opportunity to score the film. And even after Hermann accepted the job, he often disagreed with Hitchcock — most notably, when the director wanted the infamous shower scene to be completely silent. Hermann worked on the scene in secret, and was surprised when Hitchcock loved the result. Tonight, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this auspicious marriage of shower-victim-screaming, knife-jabbing, and all-string orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony performs Hermann's score live along with the film.
