Richard Dreyfuss portrayed marine biologist Hooper in Jaws (1975) and last year his remake of the 1978 film Piranha came out in 3D. When the Oscar-winning actor isn't making carnivorous fish movies, he indulges his twin passions: Civil War reenactments and crusading to bring Civics back into American classrooms. The fiery actor-activist believes Civics doesn't have to be boring and has approached George Lucas to help make his proposed curriculum more technologically exciting. Tonight, expect a close encounter of a Civics kind and for Dreyfuss to start his lecture the way he starts every lecture — by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Commonwealth Club says:

Recognized for his roles in Jaws (1975), American Graffiti (1973), and Mr. Holland's Opus (1995), Richard Dreyfuss has issued a call to action in our classrooms. Dreyfuss believes civic education is the foundation of public education; yet over the years, it has become more about memorizing facts and dates than understanding context and history. By incorporating logic, history, and critical thinking with a national standard, Dreyfuss hopes to inspire a new way of teaching and preparing America's youth. Learn more about his bold national initiative to enhance civic education in today's classrooms.
