SOMA-based artist Frank Kozik is a big Hello Kitty fan. In 1996 he traveled to Tokyo and had dinner with friend and famed vinyl sculptor Bounty Hunter, who challenged him to design his own kitty character. Kozik came up with the Smokin' Rabbit: a "dirty, lumpy bunny" with a cigarette hanging out of its mouth. During the character's conversion into 3D vinyl, the Japanese manufacturers misspelled the name. The "Smorkin' Labbit," as it is now known, is one of the most recognizable characters in the designer toy market. Kozik, along with urban toy heavyweights Dalek and Ron English, are the subjects of the documentary The Vinyl Frontier. Tonight, director Daniel Zana sets out to prove that vinyl toys are legitimate art forms and not just for boys who have outgrown their childhood toys.

SF Frozen Film Festival says:

This documentary chronicles the rise of a revolution in art: vinyl art. Using graffiti artists, musicians, and underground artists from around the world, this new 'toy' art has turned the art world on its head, and spun a break-dance 360.  Features local icons Frank Kozik, and a cast of wild boundary pushers turning melted plastic into political statements and gallery pieces. Artists to speak after.
