“In its 30th year, the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival showcases complex perspectives on Jewish identity. One angle: Jews are badass. In its film series and panel discussion Tough Guys, the festival highlights Jewish gangsters in film. Among these Semitic criminals is Bugsy Siegel, played by Warren Beatty in Bugsy (1991), the head of the Genovese crime family's West Coast gambling operations and Las Vegas' original founding father. But, of course, not all Jews are criminals. Spike Jonze, indie filmmaker and bona fide Jew (he was born Adam Speigel), directs a humorous and whimsical short, Maurice at the World's Fair, made as an 80th birthday present to Maurice Sendak. Gangsters and children's book illustrators are just some of the festival's whole mishpocheh.”
SFJFF says:
Founded in 1980, the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival is the first and largest of its kind in the world. Today, we are more than a festival: we are the leading advocate for independent Jewish cinema.
