Gamelan is an Indonesian form of music created with metallophones, xylophones, drums, gongs, strings, and bamboo flutes. The instruments are tuned together and the simple, joyous, and hypnotic sound they collectively create has influenced minimalist artists like Brian Eno and Philip Glass. In 1979, Balinese composer and Berkeley resident, I Waya Suweca, founded Gamelan Sekar Jaya — the first US-based gamelan ensemble. The group currently has 60 members who play several styles of gamelan and also incorporate traditional Balinese dance into their performances. Tonight, the orchestra is joined by dancer, Ni Ketut Sri Laksmi, performing Oleg Tamulilingan: a depiction of a romance between two bumblebees.

BAM/PFA says:

Led by a master artist from Bali, I Dewa Putu Berata, Gamelan Sekar Jaya's two percussion ensembles will perform in traditional Balinese formation, surrounding their dancers and encouraging an intimate circulation among the audience. The evening will open with a rare listening experience of a reel-to-reel recording of an a cappella mix of the Beach Boys' seminal album Pet Sounds.
