“In 1655, the British Royal Navy began doling out rum to its men, and the spirit has permeated sailors' stories ever since. The phrase "tapping the admiral" means to have a spot of rum and its origins are grizzly: when Lord Nelson died in battle at Trafalgar, the only preservative on hand was Naval rum and so the admiral was pickled in a cask of it. The sailors were not about to let a little desecration stand between them and their daily grog and "tapped" the makeshift coffin. Black Tot Day commemorates the dark moment in history when British Parliament removed rum from Naval rations. Today marks the 40th anniversary and Smuggler's Cove will be manning the deck. With over 200 rums on hand and a menu of 70 plus cocktails, you could be forgiven if your history gets a bit fuzzy towards the evening's end. Splice the mainbrace!”
