Pixar Chief Scientist Loren Carpenter is obsessed with zoetropes — the spinning "wheels of life" that were one of the first forms of animation. He helped fund Peter Hudson's monkey-themed Homouroboros, a 24-foot pedal-powered zoetrope which premiered on the playa at Burning Man in 2007. Carpenter was also the Technical Lead and driving force behind Pixar's zoetrope where 180 characters from Toy Story 2 spin on a circular disk at 25mph. When viewed under strobing lights, Woody and Buzz come to life like a 3D flip book and magic is made. This zoetrope forms the cornerstone of Pixar's 25th-anniversary art exhibition which opens today at the Oakland Museum of California.

Oakland Museum of California says:

Walt Disney's arrival in Los Angeles in the 1920s firmly established California as a magnet for animation artists in the decades to come. Home to a number of leading studios, the San Francisco Bay Area has emerged as a global center for animation today. Pixar: 25 Years of Animation provides an unprecedented look at the renowned Emeryville-based studio (located just a few miles from OMCA) and showcases the creative work behind its wildly successful computer-animated films. The OMCA presentation includes all of the artwork from the original presentation at the NY MOMA, plus art from Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up, and Pixar's latest film, Toy Story 3.
