one crazy wet hot american summer
Sunday July 4, 2010 (3, 5, 7 & 9pm)
$9.75
Although you wouldn't know from San Francisco's climate, summer is here. The Roxie wants to do our part to remind you of this by presenting a double feature of two fantastic summer comedies on the summer-iest of days, July 4th:
Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
1981. August. It's the last day at Camp Firewood. Will Camp Director Molly (Janeane Garofalo) falls in love with astrophysicist Henry Newman (David Hyde Pierce)? Who is Katie (Marguerite Moreau) going to choose – suave Andy (Paul Rudd) or inexperienced Coop (Michael Showalter)? Who's going to win the talent show? Is SKYLAB going to plummet to Earth and kill everyone?
Released to abject critical and commercial failure, Wet Hot American Summer has taken its rightful place as one of the most beloved comedies in a generation. The film (written by Michael Showalter and David Wain, who also directed the picture) perfectly skewers that sub-sub-sub-sub-genre of film comedy concerning itself with 1980s summer camps while also capturing a genuine and loving sense of nostalgia for a world that only really existed on VHS and HBO.
3pm and 7pm
One Crazy Summer (1986)
1986. June. Hoops McCann (John Cusack) has just graduated high school. Failing to get the basketball scholarship his mother pushed him towards and unable to get the RISD scholarship he's pushing himself towards, Hoops takes a summer job on Martha's Vineyard. Once he arrives, it's all evil land developers, endangered nursing homes, hot rocker chicks, yacht races, hot preppy chicks, Godzilla suits, and oh so much more in this “slobs vs. snobs” stone classic by Savage Steve Holland (the singular brain behind 1985's like-minded Better Off Dead). The great cast includes Demi Moore, Joe Flaherty, Curtis Armstrong, Jeremy Piven and the inimitable Bobcat Goldthwait.
