“Most people know that singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan is the brains (and ovaries) behind the music festival Lilith Fair. In 1997, McLachlan felt there wasn't enough representation for female musicians and created a festival with an all-female lineup. Before you roll your eyes at "Breast Fest," know that it has been revamped for its 2010 reappearance with a lineup that includes Rihanna, Tegan and Sara, and power balladeers Heart. Today, raise your lighters in salute to estrogen. FYI: Heart's lead vocalist, Ann Wilson, wrote the song "Barracuda" about the band's first record label, after their label ran an ad in Rolling Stone implying that she and her sister Nancy were lesbian lovers.”
Note:
Proceeds from this concert go to Bay Area Women's and Children's Center.
Lilith Fair says:
From 1997 through 1999, Lilith Fair was one of the highest grossing touring festivals in the world with over 1.5 million fans in attendance and raising over $10 million dollars for national and local charities. Founded by Grammy Award-winning artist Sarah McLachlan, along with Dan Fraser, Marty Diamond, and Terry McBride, Lilith Fair was the only tour of its kind — a celebration of women in music featuring artists like Sheryl Crow, Christina Aguilera, Erykah Badu, the Dixie Chicks, Missy Elliot, the Pretenders, Nelly Furtado, Jewel, Queen Latifah, Indigo Girls, and of course, Sarah McLachlan. Six months ago, Lilith Fair co-founder Terry McBride announced that the all-female festival is making its return this summer.
