Johnny Depp finds inspiration in odd places for his film roles. He combined Keith Richards and Pepé Le Pew for Pirates of the Caribbean, he morphed the mannerisms of Michael Jackson and Anna Wintour into Willy Wonka, and for his portrayal of Ed Wood he blended "the blind optimism of Ronald Reagan and the enthusiasm of the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz." Depp was introduced to Edward D. Wood Jr.'s Z-movie Plan 9 From Outerspace (1959) by John Waters after they made Cry-Baby (1990) together. When Tim Burton asked Depp to play the cross-dressing director, he jumped at the chance. Just don't call Wood "the worst director in the world": Depp believes that had it not been for Ed Wood there may not have been a John Waters or a Tim Burton in the first place.

The Castro Theatre says…

Castro Theatre says:

Tim Burton's vivid recreation of the strange life and times of the director of Plan 9 From Outer Space and Glen or Glenda? is also a loving tribute to the man and his boundless enthusiasm for moviemaking. Johnny Depp and Martin Landau nail their roles as Wood and Bela Lugosi, Landau winning the Oscar.
