“The unpronounceable Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajökull, ruined countless travel plans in Europe, but for LA-based electro pop band Fol Chen, the ash-covered field was the perfect place to shoot a video for their single "In Ruins." It features two joyful teens on a romantic romp through an apocalyptic landscape. Luckily for director Chris Wilcha (This American Life), the sun doesn't set till midnight in Iceland and he completed the shoot in just one day. It's all just part of the buzz surrounding this band, who are known for hiding their faces and sending rambling political manifestos to fans on their mailing list. Tonight, get a dose of their witty-meets-weird tribal pop and get a glimpse of the band behind the smoke (and volcanic ash).”
Fol Chen says:
It hit the webwaves like a virus, making its rounds on blogs and creeping into tweets like an excited facial twitch. "In Ruins" is the dystopian feel-good dance track for spring, and signals good things to come on Fol Chen's sophomore release, Part II: the New December, out early July. Kárin Tatoyan takes vocal lead on "In Ruins"— whose playful escapism recalls Fol Chen's earlier hit, "Cable TV"— as an Eastern melody rings out from a vintage Madonna-ish mélange of cut-up funk, fuzz bass, and tinkling ivories. The song speaks to a bleak landscape, a post-apocalyptic urban warfare, yet our protagonist finds a hope in the beauty of a lover as their face is illuminated by siren lights.
