The art-rock quartet Deerhoof is pretty much your average band — if your average band reconstituted traditional pop ditties with improvised guitars, sprinkled in unidentified noise, and had lyrics chirped by what sounds like a 12-year-old Japanese girl. Founded in San Francisco in the early '90s, the band became whole when Satomi Matsuzaki, a recent émigré from Tokyo with no musical background, signed on as the singer. Drummer Greg Saunier has Tourette Syndrome, and it’s the mixture of his frenetic beats and Matsuzaki's adorable voice that make Deerhoof unique. They've made ten albums together, and their sound remains as delightfully weird as ever. Get into the spirit tonight when they play at the Bottom of the Hill.

Bottom of the Hill says…

Deerhoof says:

There's something uniquely charming about Deerhoof's songcraft, and something magic about their playing, that fills a need no other band can fill. They have that Brian Wilsonian gift for communicating, even with the barest of rock and roll provisions, every shading of their lyrics. This famously cheerful band can certainly summon the thunderclouds when needed. Like the traditional enka music of Japan that Satomi counts among her childhood influences, these songs are often haunted by heartbreak and frustration, but at the same time they're universal, and meant to give courage to the listener.
