A group of SF community members who care about sustainability have been officially recognized as the 55th Transition Initiative in the United States. Under the tutelage of leader Ania Moniuz, TransitionSF engages with pre-existing community groups like Hayes Valley Farm to increase awareness of sustainable living in urban environments. The group believes that eventually San Francisco can feed itself with local food from farms and ranches within 100 miles. Help the group take their first baby steps towards that goal — tonight, Ania and the gang are starting a new project. Volunteers are invited to plant and nurture fruit trees around the city that can eventually be harvested by appreciative urbanites. Free fruit and karma points? Green thumbs up.

Transition SF says:

SF Orchards project is a vision of Transition to create local food by planting perennial fruit trees in the city. The project kickoff is to create a working group that will assess the available spaces, organizations that need to be onboard, design a plan for planting, caring, and harvesting trees. Please come to the meeting if you are interested in volunteering your time and/or ideas.
