Stag beetles are so beloved in Japan that they're known as "black diamonds" and are sold live in department stores and vending machines. Japanese bug reverence runs deep — in the 18th century haiku master Issa wrote "Fleas in my hut/it is my fault/you look so skinny" and in 1999 a Japanese businessman bought a particularly large stag beetle for $90,000. Entymologically-obsessed film director Jessica Oreck (who is also a docent at the American Museum of Natural History) investigates this world in her documentary Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo. Tonight she invites you to join her in exploring the weird divide between the Western practice of annihilating bugs and the Japanese practice of revering them.

Sundance Kabuki Cinema says…

Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo says:

Working backwards through history, Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo explores the mystery of the development of Japan's love affair with bugs. Using insects like an anthropologist's toolkit, the film uncovers Japanese philosophies that will shift Westerners' perspectives on nature, beauty, life, and even the seemingly mundane realities of their day-to-day routines.
