During Dennis Hopper's career he was mentored by James Dean on the set of Rebel Without a Cause (1955); worked with the great John Wayne; received acclaim for his directorial debut, Easy Rider (1969); and begged director David Lynch to let him play the psychopathic Frank Booth in Blue Velvet (1986). The first time he met his Blue Velvet co-star, Isabella Rossellini, was on-set just before he had to huff nitrous oxide and enact the scene where he rapes her character, Dorothy Vallens. He first discovered Rossellini was actually naked under her velvet robe after the cameras started rolling. This week, experience the many faces of Dennis Hopper as the Castro Theatre screens some of his best work. Afterward, consider toasting a Pabst Blue Ribbon to the iconic actor who died earlier this year.

The Castro Theatre says…

The Castro Theatre says:

The French had a good reason for coming up with the phrase enfant terribles and it couldn't apply any better than in describing Dennis Hopper. His was an amazingly fulfilled career in Hollywood for more than five decades. His best movies knit together rules of "like-souled losers trying to put together the 'big picture,' from an insufficient number of pieces." Love him or hate him, he was one of a kind. On August 4, check out a double-feature of Easy Rider (1969) and Colors (1988). On August 5, see Blue Velvet (1986) and Rivers Edge (1986). And on August 6 catch Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Hoosiers (1986).
